Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of multisensory teaching methods Fernald and Orton-Gillingham on reading performance in the dyslexic students of second and third grade elementary schools. The method of study is quasi-experimental with three groups (two experimental groups and a control group) with pre-test and post-test. Statistical population included dyslexic students who had referred to Ebnesina center of Karaj city. Through the whole number sampling method, 21 people were selected and were randomly divided into in two experimental groups and one control group (Fernald group: 7 people, Orton-Gillingham group: 7 people, control group: 7 people). Then, Shafieiet et al's reading diagnostic test was carried out on all three groups as the pre-test. The two experimental groups were exposed to training for 7 30-minute sessions through Fernald and Orton-Gillingham methods and at the end of interventions reading diagnostic test was conducted on the three groups. The reading errors of these three groups were compared in the pre-test and post-test using the analysis of covariance. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of reading test in the experimental and the control groups in the post-test. The results of pairwise comparison of groups showed that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of Fernald and Orton-Gillingham groups in the post-test.
